ECO-SCORE PROGRAM
Eco Score Program
Navigating seafood sustainability can be confusing. With numerous certifications and ratings—Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), GlobalG.A.P., Seafood Watch, and more—it’s not always clear what each one means.
We applaud these efforts and share the belief that we must all purchase and consume more sustainably. But for chefs, fishmongers, and consumers ready to vote with their dollars and make a positive impact, where do you start?
As your seafood partner, we built the Eco Score Program to cut through the noise. It recognizes and elevates industry progress, and gives you clear, actionable guidance so you can make informed purchasing decisions that directly benefit ocean health. We’re proud to be the first seafood distributor to offer a tool like this.
How It Works
1) We compare the data to our benchmarks
Our Eco Score aggregates credible certifications, accreditations, Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), and rating programs (e.g., MSC, ASC, GlobalG.A.P., Seafood Watch) and evaluates them against our internal standards. Every product we source receives a score in our system.
2) We analyze and score your purchases
Each month, you receive a customized email listing every item you ordered and your cumulative Eco Score. Review your results at a glance and decide whether to stay the course or adjust for improvement.
Scores 6.0+ = Good
Scores 7.75+ = Excellent
There’s no true “perfect score”—no item is 100% sustainable—but informed, strategic choices can get you very close.
3) We review and improve together
Track your monthly emails and your trends over time. Small menu or case changes can noticeably raise your score. Our team will recommend smart substitutions wherever you want help, making it easy to improve your impact.
What’s Next
Los Angeles Seafood Co. is committed to raising our Eco Score year over year, aiming to place all purchases in the “Excellent” category by 2025. It’s ambitious—we distribute over 5 million pounds of seafood annually—but it’s essential for healthy oceans and the future of our business.
